History of Campus Courts and Bern St. Apartments

Campus Courts

The apartments at Campus Courts were built in 1968 and 1969 for student housing. The building is unique in that it was built not with red brick, but with taupe brick. Paul W. Baer felt that the color would stand out against Miami’s red brick.

Bern Street

Bern Street was built in the late 1950s. It was designed by Victor Furth, a Miami University Professor of Architecture, who was originally from Czechoslovakia. The building is architecturally pleasing, with hardwood floors and large bedrooms, while the top apartments have vaulted ceilings. The main entryways are wide with redwood accents. Originally, the apartments were designed for the general population, as can be seen in the presence of an original sandbox in the yard.

The White House at 111 Bern Street

The White House was originally located on Maple Avenue and was Miami faculty housing. During this time, Web Eubanks, the famous football coach, lived there, as Physical Education teacher for boys at Miami’s Laboratory School, McGuffey. He taught grades K-12, as well as coached McGuffey’s Inter-Varsity teams. Scheduled to be torn down in the early 1950s to make room for what is currently Scott Hall, the White House was bought by Paul W. Baer, and moved to its present location.

308 S. Campus Avenue

Originally the building at 308 S. Campus was a garage for dairy trucks used in Paul W. Baer’s business, White Cross Dairy.  The actual dairy was located nearby. In 1936, the dairy burned to the ground, and the garage was expanded and converted into a new dairy, which is the current building. It became a restaurant in the 1950s and has housed a variety of eating establishments since then. The four apartments above 308 were added in the 1940s.

The Office

The Campus Courts and Bern Street office is located at 131 E. Spring Street off Campus Avenue. It is in the downstairs corridor of the Baer family house, which was built before 1824.
